Not By Much

Everyone is talking about how late of a Spring we are having.  To be honest, it  FEELS different, but when I look back through the weather book I see it isn't much different.

April 23 and 24 of 2012 saw snow, as did April 20 - 25 of 2013.  Granted, 2012 was a weird year, and we already had trilliums blooming by now, but snow this late in the season is not uncommon.

The ice on the lake is still holding strong, but I imagine it will start to break up soon  It just started turning black today, but is open in the smaller bays.  Last year the ice was out April 25.

We are all looking forward to warmer days ahead.

Snowy Days

I really dislike weather complainers.  You know the type- those people who complain about what's going on outside no matter what.  Too cold, too wet, too hot, too snowy.

I try hard to not be a weather complainer, but this winter is wearing on me.  It's almost always too cold to be out and about with a tiny little girl, and if it's not too cold, it's too snowy or too windy or...you see where I'm going here.

I try to get out when I can, but even then, there isn't anywhere to go!  The snow is far too deep.  Up and down the driveway we go.

I long for spring days when I can put her in the back pack, pull on my boots and head off across the fields.

A Bad Winter?

I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about.  Is this a bad winter?  I suppose it depends on your point of view. Winter is just doing Winter's job.  Winter is working very hard this year.

Record -breaking snowfall?  Check.

Record-breaking cold temperatures?  Check.

Days upon days where families with very young children are stuck inside?  Check.

Multiple school bus cancellations?  Check.

Snowfall even when it's ridiculously cold?  Check.

Constant snow squall warnings?  Check.

You see, this Winter gets an A+.  It just won't quit.  It barely took a break for the January thaw.  You can't knock this Winter.  It's working overtime.

Let's just hope Spring and Summer have caught some of Winter's work ethic.

Old Fashioned Winter

In case you hadn't heard, it's snowing.  And it's mighty cold.

It's snowing much that my husband is spending the better part of many days just plowing and snow-blowing.  I do love it all, but I don't love the work it creates, and if I wasn't on maternity leave this year (meaning, I don't have to go anywhere if I don't feel like it), I'd be cursing it.

Many people are calling it an old-fashioned winter, and while I don't really agree with that statement, it has been a very different year.  It has been incredibly cold and we have received an unbelievable amount of snow.  Those two things generally don't go hand in hand.

I wonder what the remainder of winter will bring.  Every time I think it can't possibly snow more, or get any colder, it does.  I hope you are able to snuggle up warm and safe out of the blustery days.

Go Home, Mother Nature...

...you are drunk.

It snowed last night.  It's snowing again as I write this.

In early spring, I had patience for the cold, snowy weather while those around me moaned and complained, but my patience is now wearing thin.  I am ready for warm temperatures!  Gentle breezes!  Open windows!

I feel like I should be gearing up for Christmas with the weather that we are having. The only hints of spring are in the bulbs coming up, some early perennial growth, fat buds on some trees and, of course, puddles.

I keep telling myself that when the warmer weather does arrive, I will appreciate all that much more..but when will that be?!

Not Complaining.

While the temperatures we have been experiencing so far this spring are still in the realm of normal, I will admit that the weather has been somewhat of a tough pill to swallow.

I'm not complaining, though.

We had snow last night and again this morning.  The ice still booms on the lake through the night - not because it's breaking up, but because it's still forming.  We have had temperatures well below 0 overnight during the past week.  The lake has shown no signs of melting ice yet.

We have lost a significant amount of snow, due to rain and some warmer daytime temperatures, but much still remains.

I'm not complaining.

Hopefully one day soon, we will wake up to the robins singing, and the first green shoot emerging from the earth.  That day is not today, and probably not tomorrow...or the next.

Still not complaining.

The Top

Today I made it out to the top of the falls.  Considering my current state of closing in on 29 weeks pregnant with my second child, it wasn't the easiest of hikes, but it was well worth it.

The river is wide open, and the water at a low - moderate level.  Animal tracks are everywhere (which is a post for another day).

Sadly, even through the snow is still several feet deep, I can still only say I've seen the falls in three seasons, this technically being early Spring.

Snow Hike

We still have a significant amount of snow, but it's perfectly packed right now, making walking possible.  Today we ventured out into the fields and forest.
