Cool

After a week or so of hot weather, cooler temperatures seem here to stay.  Everything is still green and bright - the crunchy grass phenomenon that strikes late July is nowhere to be found.   The air is fresh, and itss always pleasant to be outside.

We have had a few days that have been a little too fall like for my liking, but in general, this summer's weather has been a welcome change for me  I do hope for a few more days of hot weather - the baby girl has cute clothes to wear!

From the Weather Book

Very dry, and right now it feels more like fall than summer.  Even the wind in the leaves sounds like fall.  I think it's because of how very, very dry everything is right now.

Garden Update

The weeds continue to thrive.  Henry and I were out today to try to put a dent in them.  I have found something that will keep him occupied - I pulled the car around, and he sat in the driver's seat playing quite happily for half an hour.  He loves to "drive".

-corn has tassels
-onions are doing whatever they do
-carrots are thriving (we thinned some and enjoyed some baby carrots)
-there is finally some action in the parsnip row
-the artichoke plants are HUGE
-broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts plants are hanging in there
-pepper plants are taking off
-the few bean plants that came up are making beans!
-flowers on both melon and cucumber plants
-heirloom tomatoes continue to ripen

I'm thrilled by the experience.  Yes, the weeds are frustrating and I spend entirely too much time thinking about them, BUT, I am happy with my garden and every little sprout and every little vegetable that comes from it.

Let's Go for a Run

I am constantly struck by beauty everytime I run.  Today I'm sharing it with you.

Dry

It's has been painfully dry, and I'm starting to see the effects outside.  The vegetable garden is fine (aside from monster weeds), as we have the sprinkler on it every evening for a few hours.

In the front garden, though, we are losing previously well-established plants.  Up and down highway 518, trees are turning early, and looking very, very dry.

Just a few days ago, this fern was still lush and green.  I hope it comes back next year...

Even the dandelion greens are flat on the ground.

A Mid-Summer Dream of Swords

I had a dream about the old general store at Swords last week.  In it, someone was restoring the entrance, and it was all locked up - everything changed.

I am often by Swords on my runs, and so I had to go around the back for a peak at the door in my dream. It was changed.  The tether that keeps the door latched was gone.  I'm not sure what else has changed - if anything.

Swords right now is leafy green and lush.  The only building making is presence fully known is the general store.  The others are shrouded in the verdant leaves of summer.  The second house isn't even visible from the road.  One would not know it, or its outbuildings existed, so deeply hidden in the woods they are.

Summer holds Swords' secrets close.  And the deer flies and mosquitoes make sure no one sticks around too long to investigate further.

Look close and you can see the peak of the blood red staircase in the second house. Every time this staircase catches my eye, my stomach flips.  I'm always caught off guard.
